RECAP: Women’s volleyball falls in crucial matchup with Sherbrooke

The Gee-Gees women’s volleyball team hit the road for their final regular season with the Sherbrooke Vert et Or on Sunday afternoon. The Vert et Or took the home court win 3-0.

The teams last met only a week before, where the Vert et Or took a 3-1 win. Back in November, it was the Gee-Gees who earned a 3-2 win. With a tight RSEQ playoff race, both teams were on the hunt for a big victory.

Sherbrooke had a quick start, putting up five straight points before Ottawa got on the board. As usual, the Gee-Gees were gritty, refusing to let the set get away from them and eventually tying things up at 13-13.

While the Vert et Or managed to take the opening set 25-22, it wasn’t without difficulty, and the Gee-Gees came out firing, putting up a 3-0 lead to kick off the second set.

Sherbrooke regained control, but a flurry of kills from Audrey Odigie, Jane McKay, and Nicole Hildebrand gave the Gee-Gees some energy heading into the second half of the set.

Again, the Vert et Or were able to put it away, taking set two 25-15.

It seemed all the momentum was on the side of the Vert et Or as once again, the Gee-Gees gave up five consecutive points to open the third set. Things rarely went in favour of Ottawa, leading Sherbrooke to a decisive 25-13 win.

The Gee-Gees have another pair of games on the road, matching up with McGill and Montreal. On Feb. 18, the team will be back in Ottawa to host UQAM in their regular season finale.
