Queen’s Men’s Volleyball beat Western in five-set battle

KINGSTON, Ont. (Feb.3, 2023) – Queen’s Men’s Volleyball won against the Western Mustangs 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 28-30, 25-19, 17-15) Friday at the Athletics and Recreation Centre.

Queen’s came out strong in the opening set, with a big kill from Lachlan Mcbride to put Queen’s in the lead. The Gaels ultimately shut down the Mustangs with three big blocks to take the set 25-19.

The Gaels found themselves falling short to the Mustangs in the second set. Although they were able to gain momentum in the end, it sadly wasn’t enough, and Western closed the set with a five-point win.

The third set was a marathon. Both teams played aggressively, but Western managed to pull ahead in the end and win the set 30-28.

Queen’s delivered a dominant performance in the fourth set, edging the Mustangs with a score of 25-19.

As pressure was rising, both on the court and in the stands, the fifth set was intense. The Gaels’ efforts were rewarded in the end as they took the set 17-15.

Eric Siksna recorded a game-high of 34 kills and Chris Zimmerman registered 52 assists. Reed Venning and Derek Chiang added three aces each.

After the match, Siksna mentioned that the team knew it would be a big game going into tonight, but with Western and Queen’s sitting neck-and-neck in the standings, having home court advantage was huge for them.

With this win, Queen’s improved their record to 10-6.

The Gaels are back on the courts Saturday, February 4th at 8 p.m. as they once again take on the Western Mustangs at the ARC.
