Players Bench Female Athlete of the Week: Bronwynn Davies-Neira
The Cougars women’s volleyball team is on a two-game win streak after their weekend in Saskatchewan. Bronwynn Davies-Neira balled out in both matches, giving the Huskies problems all night long with her adept blocking kills and ruthless killing energy.
Over the course of the weekend, Davies-Neira tallied 22 kills, 14 digs, and three blocks in the Cougars’ pair of wins. On Friday, she even served four aces in MRU’s five-set victory. She followed that up with a dominant showing on Saturday, as late in the fourth set, she nailed the game-winning kill to give the Cougars the 3-1 match win and cement their win streak.
Catch Davies-Neira and the rest of the Cougars women’s volleyball team on Friday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. as they take on the University of Calgary Dinos in the first Crowchild Classic series of the season at Jack Simpson Gymnasium and live on Canada West TV.
Players Bench Male Athlete of the Week: Dray Walburger
Newcomer Dray Walburger made a name for himself in the first weekend of this year’s Cougars men’s basketball campaign. In their two wins in Edmonton against the MacEwan University Griffins, Walburger put up an astounding 35 points, eight rebounds, and two assists, sinking shots from all over the court.
On Friday, the Cougars won a hard-fought 93-90 match against the Griffins, and Walburger’s 15 points were key in securing the victory. On a night when long-range shots were just not falling, the new addition was one of only three players to leave the game with a made three-point attempt. Walburger led a shooting clinic on Saturday for the Cougars as his team-high four three-pointers on seven attempts helped him score an efficient team-leading 20 points. That combination of volume scoring and deadeye shooting helped the Cougars secure a dominant 88-74 win against their in-province rivals and start their season with a two-game win streak.
Catch Walburger and the Cougars men’s basketball team at their home opener on Friday, Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. as they host the Trinity Western University Spartans on Kenyon Court and live on Canada West TV.
