On Saturday, Feb. 3, the Brock Badgers men’s volleyball team were swept by the host McMaster Marauders (16-25, 18-25, 19-25) in Hamilton.
Outside hitter Devin Cooney finished with 9.5 points off six kills, 1.5 blocks and one service ace to lead the Badgers.
The Badgers went point for point with the No. 3 Marauders before the Hamilton squad jumped out to an 11-7 lead in the first. The hosts kept the pressure on, winning the first set 25-16. The Badgers had to deal with some strong serving from the Marauders, who earned four aces in the frame.
McMaster came out to a 4-0 lead before Robinson notched an emphatic kill from the left pin. From there, the home side controlled the momentum, with their lead getting to as large as nine before ultimately taking the set 25-15. Nanle Yusuf was a bright spark for the Badgers, delivering two kills and a service ace after getting the start in the second set.
In contrast to the first two, the Badgers shot out to a 6-2 run off multiple errors from the Marauders. McMaster fought back to force a Brock timeout, reeling off seven of the next nine points to tie the game. Though the Badgers fought valiantly, the Marauders proved too much on this night, taking the third and final set 25-19.
Up next, the Badgers (13-5) welcome the Waterloo Warriors (10-7) at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. Buy your tickets at https://brocku.universitytickets.com or watch the action on OUA.tv.
