TORONTO – The Rams women’s volleyball team is heading up to North Bay this weekend for their final two contests of 2021.
Though the team has yet to capture a win this season, they’ve made steady progress in their first four games. Falling in four sets last weekend at Toronto’s home opener, the Rams’ aggression showed flashes of promise.
While they were eventually out-killed 48-31, the Rams’ defence was sturdy. First-year Mary Ann Rioflorido led all players with 20 digs, while Mikayla Sheriffs and Zoe Kuck added 10 digs each. The Rams also doubled up Toronto in blocks, with eight compared to Toronto’s four. Katelyn Grasman led the way, shutting the door with three blocks.
The Rams will look to maintain their defensive ability while improving their attack. However, the Lakers have some of the best defence in the OUA. Going 3-1 so far, they maintain a league-best .048 opponent hitting percentage. Currently sitting second in the OUA East, Nipissing fell in straight sets against York last week as their offence failed to start.
Meanwhile, service errors proved costly for the Rams last week as they sacrificed 26 against Toronto. Should the squad be able to stay sharper on the ball, a defensive battle may await them in North Bay as they seek their first win of the season.
On Friday, first serve flies at 5:00 p.m. A 2:00 p.m. start time on Saturday kicks off the Rams’ final game of 2021 before a four-game homestand to begin 2022. Both games are available to stream on OUA.TV.
