MVB: Huskies Sweep UBCO Heat

SASKATOON, SK – The Huskies were back at home to kick of the last series of the weekend against the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat. The Huskies made quick work of the Heat tonight taking the victory in straight sets.
 
The first set saw a back-and-forth battle with with both teams looking determined to take the win. Tied at 21-21 with neither team looking to give an inch, it was Saskatchewan’s Noah Opseth who would be the offensive force, serving for three of the last four points to help the Huskies win the first set 25-21.  
 
The Huskies would go up 6-3 to start the second set before UBCO would take the timeout, hoping to swing momentum their way. The timeout didn’t slow the Huskies down as they continued to thrive, extending their lead to 19-13. UBCO would put the pressure on the Dogs, battling their way back to bring the set to 22-20 Huskies. Jay Eichorst would hit the service line for the remainder of the set, leading Saskatchewan to a 25-22 win in the second set and a 2-0 lead.
 
UBCO jumped to a quick 7-3 lead in the first set before Huskies Head Coach Sean McKay called the timeout to settle the team down. The break sparked the offence as they climbed their way back to an 11-11 tie. The Heat’s offence would move things foward, going up 16-12 before McKay called another timeout. With the game tied at 19-19, the Huskies would go on a six point run, thanks to incredible serving from Quinn Buchanan. The Huskies would win in straight sets, improving to 8-4, while UBCO falls to 4-7.
 
The Huskies were lead once again by fifth-year Dylan Mortensen who had 14 kills and two aces on the night. Jake Rapin had 30 assists while Emmett Graham had a team high five digs. For the UBCO Heat, Renn Petryk led the offence with nine kills. Zach van Geel had 18 assists, and Brady Cole had three blocks for UBCO.
 
Both teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM at the PAC for the final game of 2022 before heading into the winter break. Tickets for the game can be purchased at HuskieTickets.com.
