SASKATOON, SK – Coming off a thrilling 3-2 win on Friday night, the Huskies looked to close out the weekend with a sweep of the Brandon Bobcats. Another back-and-forth battle on Saturday afternoon would not disappoint as it fell in the hands of the Huskies after four sets.
Saskatchewan started Jack McGeough, Jefferson Morrow, Lucas Musschoot, Noah Opseth, Isaiah Mamer, Emmett Graham and libero Ethan Smith. The Bobcats would go with JJ Love, Samuel Chen, Tom Friesen, Phillip Lauter, Riley Grusing, Paycen Warkentin and libero Jens Watt.
The first set opened with a flurry of attack errors on both sides until a four-serve run by setter Noah Opseth brought the Huskies up 5-2. The teams continued to trade errors until they evened out at 12. Saskatchewan tallied 31 errors compared to Brandon’s 27. The Bobcats would ultimately pull in front and take hold of the set 25-20.
The second set opened with back-to-back kills by Isaiah Mamer. The second year outside hitter out of Wilkie, SK noted that he felt this home opener weekend was successful for his team. “We trusted our guys to get their jobs done on the court and at the end of the day we managed to get a Canada West weekend sweep which is not an easy thing to do in this league,” said Mamer.
Mamer closed the second set scoring action with another kill – just one of his 18 on the evening. Huskies equalized the match with a 25-22 set two victory.
The third set started in the hands of the Huskies as they pulled an early 10-4 lead. The Dogs would continue to run a clean offence and managed to seal the third 25-20 after a Brandon service error.
The Huskies held the lead into the fourth and came out hot to close out the match. They started in front 9-4 thanks to a trifecta of kills by Emmett Graham, Lucas Musschoot, and Jefferson Morrow.
Brandon came back to equalize the set at 11 with some big plays by Samuel Chen that lead to a timeout called by Saskatchewan.
The set carried on as a series of exchanged errors until Jay Eichorst subbed in for the Huskies, shifting the momentum with a service run that snuck his team back up by one (16-15). Saskatchewan continued to build on that lead and managed close the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
