Mustangs take opening set but drop 3-1 decision to Queens

Kingston, ON – Western took the early advantage on Saturday night against Queens but fell 3-1 to drop the second match of the weekend to the Gaels.

The opening set saw both sides battle for a lead but the set remained tight with the Mustangs holding a 4-point lead (17-13) at the midway point of the set. Western would hold on to the lead through the late part of the set but Queens would draw the two sides back even at 22 a side. The Mustangs would proceed to pick up the last three points and take the opening set 25-22 and lead 1-0.

The Gaels would hold a slight lead through the second half of the second set but late in the set Western would pull the set to within one point later on at 22-21 Queens and force a timeout. The Gaels would regroup in the timeout and come out with three straight points to take the set 25-21 and even the match at 1 set apiece.

In the third set, Queens would continue their pressure and take a 12-6 advantage at the timeout. Western came out of the break with the first three points, both sides would trade a point and then Queens would get three points of their own to retain their six-point lead. Queens would round out the set with a 25-20 win and take the 2-1 lead.

The fourth set saw some much tighter scoring early on and continued throughout most of the set. Western would tie the set up late at 23-23 late in the set but Queens would respond with two straight points to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.

Next up for the Mustangs is their senior night, next Friday (February 10) at 8pm when the McMaster Marauders come to Alumni Hall.
