The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team defeated the Guelph Gryphons 3-1 (25-10, 22-25, 25-19, 25-13) on Saturday, January 7 at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
TORONTO STATS: Outside hitter Julia Murmann guided the team with a game-high 22.5 points off of 19 kills, two aces and three assisted blocks.
Burlington, Ont., native Jasmine Safar was the backbone of the Blues, recording a total of 34 assists and adding seven digs on the night.
Rookie Olivia Zhu added 12 points and 14 digs, while veteran Hope Kotun added 11 points and 13 digs. Libero Natalia Souza totaled a season-high 28 digs in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Toronto started strong as ever, gaining the lead early and swiftly taking the first set at 25-10.
The second set proved to be a tight battle with both teams gaining the lead every few rallies. Despite the Blues impressive diving efforts, the Gryphons manage to take the second by the skin of their teeth at 22-25.
During the third set, Zhu and commerce major Elizabeth Bilawey put up a brick wall, surprising the Gryphons with block after block, ultimately coming out on top, 25-19.
Exhilarated from the third-set victory, Toronto dominated the last set, finishing with a 12-point lead, 25-13.
UP NEXT: The Blues return to action next Sunday, January 15 as they host the McMaster Marauders in their annual OVA Day. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
