Men’s volleyball team pick up second win against York

The Brock Badgers men’s volleyball team picked up their second win of the season over the York Lions on Sunday, Nov. 5 winning 3-1 in four sets (25-19, 25-23, 24-26, 25-17).

The Badgers started off the first set in strong fashion, picking up five consecutive points, including an ace from sophomore Liam Strong.

Junior Kylar Code’s first kill of the set came from a powerful strike that was too hot for the York Lions’ player to handle, making the score 9-5 for Brock.

Freshman Adam Shapcott picked up his first OUA point as the Sport Management major recorded an ace to give the Badgers a 17-12 advantage in the first set.

An attack error from York gave Brock the first-set win 25-18.

The Badgers recorded 11 kills in the first set to York’s nine.

The second set opened with plenty of service errors for both sides with Ottawa product Jacob Ferland eventually earning the first kill of the set.

The two sides continued to trade points, with Code earning an important kill that made the scoreline 19-17 for the Brock Badgers.

Two straight aces from Shapcott put Brock in touching distance of a second-set win.

Despite trying to regroup after a timeout, a service error from York gave the Badgers a 25-23 set win, putting them in pole position to take the game.

After exchanging the lead in the third set, it was the Lions who eventually pulled away looking to put themselves back into the game.

Senior Grant Reddon picked up his second kill of the set on an assist from Justin Rulli-Levere cutting York’s lead down to just three.

After going down 16-23 in the set, the Badgers mounted a comeback that saw them tie the game at 24-24 off a Lions’ attack error. However, York would earn the third set win, taking it by a score of 26-24 in extras.

Multiple attack errors in the fourth set from York gave Brock a three-point lead, breaking a run of back-and-forth play and prompting a Lions’ timeout.

Kills from Devin Cooney, Code and Ferland saw the Badgers pull away from York in the middle of the set.

Brock’s domination in the fourth set continued as back-to-back aces from Ferland put the Badgers firmly in the driver’s seat to take the win.

A service error from York sealed a fourth-set win for Brock with the scoreline showing 25-17.

The Badgers’ kill leader was Ferland with 11 in the win. Reddon had 33 assists on the day while Code had a game-high 13 digs for Brock.

Up next, the Brock Badgers (2-0) will host their first match of the season, where they will take on the TMU Bold (0-2) on Friday, November 10 at 8 p.m.
