Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Waterloo

BOX SCORE

This Friday, Queen’s Men’s Volleyball continued their series of home games, facing off against the Waterloo Warrior and securing a straight set win (25-13, 25-14, 30-28).

The Gaels shared kills and points evenly through out the match. Lachlan McBride (Law) and Reed Venning (Arts & Science) picked up 10 kills, Nikola Mitrovic (Economics) added eight, and Izaak Zabjek (Kinesiology) and Dax Tompkins (Arts) added six and seven respectively.

Tompkins started Queens’ dominance early, nabbing three kills in the first seven points of the game.

“I think it definitely provides some energy. I think if you can go into the game at the beginning and be a force and get a couple quick points early it just lifts everyone up and get them in a good mood,” Tompkins said.

The Gaels offense continued to run smoothly throughout the entirety of the match. They amassed 41 kills to the Warriors 22.

“I think we wanted to come out and play our style of play, which is aggressive. Fortunately, we didn’t make many errors we were really clean on offense tonight,” Head Coach Gabe deGroot commented.

Through the second set, Queen’s continued their strong offense, and made magic happen at the service line.

Chris Zimmerman led the team in service aces with five. Mitrovic, Venning, and Zabjec each added two a piece.

The energy in the ARC shifted during the third set, as the Warriors picked up steam. The match went point for point and Waterloo led for the first time.

“We’re really relentless in the belief that we can win every match. I think teams know that we believe that we can win every match and every set,” deGroot said. “Our guys know how to win in tight situations and tight matches and so our experience came through and I ultimately reminding them to trust their training and play our style.”

The game continued point for point until a big block from Tompkins and Zimmerman brought the Gaels over the edge.

“There’s definitely some points in volleyball that seem to be bigger points than others and if we can get a big moment like that in the game it just boosts everyone’s moral,” Tompkins reflected.

With a final kill from Mitrovic the Gaels secured the win.

With the win, the Gaels record on the season improves to 6-1.

The Gaels return to the ARC on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 6pm to rematch the Waterloo Warriors. Tickets are available for purchase through the Queen’s tickets website.
