The McMaster Marauders men’s volleyball team came back to beat the Windsor Lancers 3-2 on Saturday night in their opening season game.

At the St. Denis Centre in Windsor, Ont., the Marauders began the night by winning the first set 25-20.

However, the precedent that McMaster laid out was challenged by the eager Lancers, who came back to win the next two sets 25-19 and 25-21.

Down by one set, the Marauders didn’t give up and they rallied to win the third set with a close 25-23 final score.

Tied at 2-2, and going into the fifth and final game, it was all or nothing for both teams.

However, the Marauders came away from the last set with a 15-7 win, showing the Lancers that the impression from the first set was correct.

Offence from both teams was intense and close, with 147 and 151 total attacks for McMaster and Windsor, respectively.

It was the Marauders besiege that reigned victorious though with an incredible 58 kills on the Lancers court.

Sam Cooper led McMaster from the attack line with 20 kills, followed by Mateusz Wlodarski with 13 and Max Gratton with 11.

Robbie Fujisawa made 48 assists for the Marauders, a major aid in their win.

On the defensive side, Wojtek Kraj put up 13 of McMaster’s 18 blocks to put a stop to the Lancers, who only managed to grab 14.

Returning Windsor’s attacks, McMaster had 54 digs, Fujisawa leading with 11.

The Marauders are set to take on the Gryphons next in Guelph on Nov. 12.
