GUELPH, Ont. – Coming off of their first loss of the season, the women’s volleyball team showed no signs of weakness today as they took on the Guelph Gryphons. Their powerful serving and hustle on defence led them to win the game 3-0.
Although they started off the first set behind by a few points, McMaster quickly caught up. They kept their foot on the gas to gain a sizeable lead. Their 25-19 win was led by setter Emma Dhanjal who played her first game back from injury, putting up an impressive 11 assists, 3 kills, and 4 digs in the first set. Outside hitter Sullie Sundara put on a show on offense. She was everywhere, hitting from the left side, right side, and backcourt to gain her 6 kills in just the first set.
The second set was more competitive. As the Gryphons stepped up their play, slinging in a series of powerful serves, the Marauders did well to hustle on defense and keep the ball alive. The back-and-forth ended with McMaster winning 28-26. Guelph came out strong again to start the third set, but the Marauders’ aggressive offense spurred them on a long scoring run. McMaster demolished the Gryphons 25-16 to take the victory.
The Marauders ended the game with 51 digs compared to Guelph’s 32, which is a testament to their resilient defense. Sullie Sundara was all over the stat-line as usual, picking up 13 kills, 2 aces, and 9 digs. First-year outside hitter Olivia Julien also had an outstanding game with 8 kills, 3 aces, and 13 digs.
The women seek to dominate Guelph again in their rematch tomorrow. Catch them at 6:00 pm as they play their last season game of 2023.
