OTTAWA – Rachel Leduc of Montreal scored a team-leading 13 points as visiting McGill cruised to a 3-0 sweep over the Ottawa Gee-Gees in women’s volleyball action at Montpetit Hall, Friday. The set scores were 28-26, 27-25 and 25-20.
It was McGill’s 17th consecutive league victory over Ottawa since a 3-1 setback on Nov. 11, 2016.
Leduc, a 6-foot-1 power-hitter collected her points on 11 kills and a pair of stuff blocks. The 20-year-old management freshman added one dig and an assist.
She is a first-year transfer from Camosun College in Alberta.
Leduc’s offensive exploits was buttressed by Charlene Robitaille (8 pts) and Victoria Iannotti (pts).
Veteran McGill setter Audrey Trottier of Longueuil, Que., started but was limping and saw limited duty over three sets after suffering a minor injury from a fall on an icy sidewalk before boarding the team bus en route to the game. She had nine assists, three digs and a block.
Sophomore setter Charlotte Chouinard-Laliberte, a native Montrealer who was returning from an injury of her own, came off the bench to post 16 assists, one kill, a pair of aces and three digs.
“Our offensive production was off today because we struggled on serve receive,” said McGill head coach Rachèle Béliveau. “But I was pleased that we were able to recover from being behind to finish our sets strong. Also, our depth played an important role again today. Leduc saved us on offence, Charlotte had some much-needed court time and Clara Poire did a good job off the bench.”
Poiré, a starter last year, has been hampered by injuries and is slowly working her way back into the lineup. She saw duty in two sets and was credited with a pair of kills, one block and a dig,
Leading the offence for the Gee-Gees was Grace McKale (16 points) and Audrey Odigis (10).
Ottawa had a 42-34 edge in kills and a 44-42 margin in digs. McGill held a slight 7-6 advantage in stuff blocks and both teams registered four service aces apiece.
The Martlets improved to 5-2 and moved into a second-place tie with Montreal (5-1) in the RSEQ standings, two points behind division-leading UQAM (6-2). Ottawa dropped to 2-4 and sit sixth in the seven-team league.
The Gee-Gees will play at last-place UQTR (1-7) on Sunday (Nov. 20), while McGill has a week off before hosting Sherbrooke (3-5) on Nov. 27 at 1 pm. The Martlets will be looking to avenge a 3-2 loss in Sherbrooke on Oct. 30.
