The York University Lions women’s volleyball team continued their fine form as they made it five in a row in the league by beating the Lakehead Thunderwolves in straight sets.
Having never gone down by more than a point, the Lions achieved 25-23, 25-15 and 25-19 set-victories, with the team’s starting middle hitter Christina Piccinin scoring a game-high 13 points. Alisa Trubyuk, Amarai Endes and Madison Shanks all followed suit with seven points each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Graduating outside hitter Olivia Kim suffered an injury in her team’s Friday game against Lakehead, but still made the game’s opening serve before subbing out of the game to a loud ovation on her final regular season game.
- Kim currently leads the Lions in both kills and points.
- Lakehead and York went back and forth in the opening set, with York outlasting the Thunderwolves with a 25-23 final score.
- The second set saw the Lions gain an early six-point lead. York converted on 40 per cent of their total attacks, utilizing the middle of the court. They took a 25-15 lead.
- The Lions’ substitutes did not disappoint in the third set, with the likes of Brooklyn Parliament, Megan McDonald, Stefani Mrkalj and Chloe Ladd all contributing to carry the Lions towards the finish line, with the set ending 25-19 to York.

The Lions have now finished their 2022-23 season schedule, and will be slotted into the fifth OUA playoff spot after winning five straight games to cap off the regular season. They now await the results of the final games on the OUA schedule before learning their playoff opponent.
