LIONS FALL IN FOUR SETS TO BLUES

The York University Lions women’s volleyball team was looking for revenge against their cross-town rivals, the Toronto Varsity Blues, since their 3-2 loss to the team on Dec. 3, 2023. Unfortunately, the Lions once again fell short, as the Blues secured the victory in four sets Saturday night at the Tait McKenzie Centre.      

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• The opening set unfolded as a narrative of a seesaw battle between the cross-town adversaries, with both teams trading points. At a deadlock of 18 points each, the Lions managed to orchestrate a 7-3 surge, fueled by a Victoria Herrington kill to secure the first set with a score of 25-21.
• The second set proved to be another tightly contested match, with the advantage shifting towards the visiting team. The Blues maintained a slight edge over the Lions throughout the set, leveling the match at 1-1 after securing a 25-19 victory in the set.
• With the game tied at 15-15 at the midway point of the third set, the Blues put together a 6-1 run to cushion a 21-16 advantage and force a York timeout. Despite the Lions determined comeback, fueled by kills from Brooklyn Parliament, Ella Rohani, and Herrington, they managed to narrow the gap to 23-21. Nevertheless, a combination of a service error and a kill by Kara Chan proved decisive, allowing the Blues to clinch the third set with a score of 25-23.
• The Blues got off to a hot start, firing off to an 11-4 run and forcing the Lions to call a second timeout in the set. This early surge set the tone for the visitors, and they maintained their momentum throughout, ultimately securing the set 25-17 and the game with a 3-1 final.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions aim to change their fate as they face off against the Waterloo Warriors on Friday, Jan. 12, in a double-header weekend in Waterloo. The first serve is set to fly at 6:00 pm.
