After coming up short in a five-set marathon to the Western Mustangs on Friday night, the York University Lions women’s volleyball team had a chance to exact some revenge on the Mustangs in the second match of the weekend set Saturday night at Tait McKenzie Centre.
The Lions won the second set of the game 25-16 after losing the first set by the same margin. Western won the third set 25-23 and carried that momentum forward to win the final set 25-14 and take the match 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
York struggled in the first set, with the Mustangs defense blocking most of their kill attempts. Jessica Reynolds was the main attacking outlet for the Lions, managing several kills in the first set. Despite her solid play, the Lions lost the opening set 25-16
The Lions regained their composure in the second set and took a 9 point lead which they managed to keep with Olivia Kim and Reynolds taking the set away from Western with Kim getting the final set winning kill, in a 25-16 Lions win which tied the match at a set apiece.
The third set saw the Mustangs take the advantage building a huge lead which was whittled down by a spirited comeback effort from the Lions. At one point down 19-12, York rallied to tie, thanks to some strong work from Reynolds and Christina Piccinin among others. The Lions were unable to complete the comeback, however, and dropped the third set 25-23.
The Lions could not keep up with the Mustangs combination of aggressive offense and active defense in the fourth set. The Mustangs got out to a 12-4 lead, and pulled away to the tune of 25-14 to secure the four-set victory..
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions are back in action Friday night at the Goldring Centre to face The Toronto Varsity Blues. First serve is at 6:00 pm. They then head to Guelph the following night to take on the Gryphons at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre, also at 6:00 pm. Both games are available on OUA.tv
