University of Regina women’s volleyball player Jessica Lerminiaux was named the Canada West Player of the Week on Tuesday after her performance in the Cougars’ weekend split at Brandon.
Lerminiaux was brilliant in Friday’s victory, piling up 24 kills to set a school record for most kills in a four-set match. The fourth-year outside hitter had just six errors on 57 attacks, giving her a blistering .316 hitting percentage for the night.
And she also hit the 20-kill mark in Saturday’s match, finishing with exactly 20 while hitting .275 for the Cougars.
Over the two matches, Lerminiaux collected a total of 44 kills, 18 digs, and five blocks while hitting at a .296 clip.
“Jessica was outstanding on Friday and elevated our entire team’s performance in that win,” Cougars head coach Melanie Sanford said. “And she was also great on Saturday, so it’s nice to see her earn some recognition for her play this weekend. Jessica has been brilliant all season as a player and as a leader and she’ll go down as one of the most outstanding left sides that this program has ever had.”
Lerminiaux finishes the Canada West schedule with 265 kills in 62 sets. Her average of 4.27 kills per set not only leads Canada West this year, but also breaks Desiree Ates’ school single-season record which had stood at 4.08 since the 2013-14 season.
The Cougars will start the Canada West postseason in Edmonton this weekend in a four-team pod along with Alberta, UBC, and Winnipeg. The top two teams of those four will advance to the second round.
