The Windsor Lancer men’s volleyball team were back in action on Saturday to face the Nipissing Lakers at the Robert J. Surtees Student Athletic Centre to end the weekend series.
The blue and gold were able to cruise to another 3-0 (25-19, 35-33, 25-19) win in a dramatic fashion to win their fifth in a row and improve to 13-4 on the season.
STATS
Outside hitter Zach Albert had a great game contributing 12 kills and 1 service ace while Gustavo Siqueira also jumped in front of the Lakers into the double digits with 12 kills.
Fifth year setter Anthony DeGirolamo put the Lancers in motion setting up 35 assists and 11 digs to bring the team to their second consecutive win this weekend.
GAME FLOW
Windsor returned to the court with fresh legs as they traded points between the Lakers. The Lancers would go on a five-point run and Nipissing was forced into a timeout looking for a better strategy to limit Windsor’s chances. The blue and gold stole the first set 25-19 and an early 1-0 lead in the contest.
In the second set, the Lancers carried their momentum to put the Lakers into some scoring trouble. Middle Anthony Ivanoski would send the Lakers scrambling on the court unable to respond. Although Windsor was determined to keep the lead, Nipissing would force their first turnover of the match-up to slow down the Lancers. That would quickly not be the case as the blue and gold stepped up their offense to put themselves back on top. Third year, Luca Natase found an open space to make a kill that the Lakers did not anticipate. As both the teams would battle it out exchanging points, it would be Windsor who would snag a 35-33 second set and sailed to a comfortable 2-0 lead.
The third set saw the blue and gold come in with a clear purpose in hopes to put the match away. Staying within striking distance, Nipissing would hold on and meet Windsor at 4-4. In the set both teams would go on significant scoring runs with the Lancers able to maintain a lead for much of the period. The final play would see the teams trade blows before the Lancers would close out the match, 25-19 and earn the 3-0 win.
