Box Score The Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team continued their great start.
The Lakers welcomed to the Ryerson Rams to the RJ Surtees Athletic Centre Friday night as part of a two-match set to wrap up the first half of the season.
Nipissing started the weekend with a convincing victory, sweeping the Rams 3-0.
In the first set, both teams came out strong, with neither able to take control, as they sat even at 9-9 early on.
Eventually, the Lakers pulled away and grabbed a 16-13 lead at the technical timeout.
Nipissing was the first team to 20, leading the Rams 20-16, which gave them a cushion as they push towards the win.
In the end, it was the Lakers coming out on top, 25-21.
Nipissing grabbed an early 9-7 lead in the second set, but the Rams pushed back, tying things up at 13-13.
From there, the Lakers outscored Ryerson 3-1 heading into the technical timeout and led 16-14.
A late 23-20 lead translated into a 25-20 victory as the Lakers went up 2-0 in the match.
Once again, the teams found themselves even in the early going of the set, tied 8-8 in the third.
Nipissing jumped ahead 14-11 shortly after and grabbed a 16-15 lead at the break in the middle of the third set.
Despite being down 2-0, the Rams refused to go away and forced the Lakers into some tough shots.
The Rams hit the 20-point mark first and led the Lakers 20-19.
Nipissing answered back immediately and regained the lead, going ahead 23-22.
That’s when the wild run began.
The teams traded points from that point, getting into the 30s before the match ended.
Both teams had chances to win the set, but neither could convert until the Lakers managed to grab the win, 37-35.
The win improves the Lakers record to 5-0 with one match left in the semester.
Nipissing and the Rams are back at it Saturday as the Lakers wrap up their first half.
Match time is set for 5pm at the RJ Surtees Athletic Centre.
