Box Score The Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team has been playing some very good volleyball to begin the season and it shows in the standings.
The team was hoping to continue that this weekend with a pair of matches against the visiting Ryerson Rams, Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
To begin the weekend set, it was the Lakers who made a statement and came away with a 3-0 victory.
In the opening set, the Rams got off to a quick start, grabbing a 9-8 lead, but the Lakers responded, pulling ahead 10-9 and extending their lead shortly after.
At the technical timeout in the first set, the Lakers led 16-14.
Nipissing continued to extend their lead and scored four straight points to go up 20-14, but the Rams refused to go away, fighting back late in the set.
Up 23-18, Nipissing was able to stop a late push by the Rams and ended up taking the set 25-23, to go up 1-0 in the match.
The second set saw the Lakers come out strong, building off the win in the opening set.
Nipissing held an 11-4 lead and extended it to 16-9 at the technical timeout.
The Lakers continued to dominate the second set, extending their lead to 22-12 late in the set as they cruised to a 25-16 win to go up 2-0.
In what turned out to be the final set, the Lakers found themselves playing catch-up for most of the set, down 12-10 early.
They also trailed 16-13 at the technical timeout.
Nipissing would then outscore the Rams 6-3 to tie the game, 19-19.
Finally, the Lakers were able to grab a lead, 22-20, late in the set and didn’t let the opportunity slip away, picking up the 25-23 victory.
The sweep gives the Lakers a 4-1 record, currently good for second place in the OUA East Division.
Nipissing and the Rams are back at it Saturday as the Lakers wrap up their first half.
Match time is set for 2pm at the RJ Surtees Athletic Centre.
