BRANDON – Kailan Robinson’s journey in volleyball has taken her across the country but her first opportunity to lead a program brings her right back to where it all began.
The Hamiota, Man. product has assumed the Interim Head Coach role for the BU women’s volleyball team for the 2023-24 season while Lee Carter is on leave.
A multi-sport athlete while growing up, Robinson originally committed to the Bobcat basketball team back in 2013 alongside twin sister Keegan before ultimately deciding to pursue volleyball.
That passion for volleyball has continued to develop and flourish over the past decade, especially for the program that is so close to both her home and her heart.
“I’m extremely honoured to be selected as the head coach for next season,” says Robinson. “Becoming a head coach was a goal I had for myself at some point in the future, but this opportunity is special to me because I’ve connected with these athletes over the last two seasons. I’m excited to get started and continue working with some amazing players and people.”
Robinson spent four seasons as a student-athlete at Lakehead University earning conference all-star accolades before transferring to McMaster University to complete her varsity career.
While at McMaster, Robinson completed a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Midwifery and now works as a Registered Midwife for Prairie Mountain Health in Brandon.
After moving to Brandon to start her career in health care she joined the Bobcats as an assistant coach and has been a strong supporter of both the student-athletes on the women’s volleyball team and the entire BU Athletics program.
“My goal for the season ahead is to build a strong team culture and strong systems as a team so that we can improve every game we play and compete with every team in the league,” Robinson says of her vision for the season ahead.
“Personally, I hope that I can influence the team to be as passionate about volleyball as I am, so they can have a competitive fire moving into this season,” Robinson adds.
“Kailan has created positive relationships with student-athletes and staff during her time as an assistant coach with the Bobcat women’s volleyball team,” says BU Athletic Director Russ Paddock.
“Her personal experiences as a student-athlete with two different U Sports programs will be invaluable in leading the team through this season,” Paddock adds.
Robinson and the Bobcats begin the Canada West conference season on the road against the Saskatchewan Huskies on Oct. 20 before beginning the home schedule against the Alberta Pandas the following weekend.
