Jonathan Pickett (Gryphons Men’s Volleyball) Named U SPORTS Athlete of the Week

TORONTO, Ont. – On Tuesday, March 12, 2024, the U SPORTS office announced the latest edition of U SPORTS Athletes of the Week, and for the ninth time during the 2023-24 season, a University of Guelph student-athlete has been named a U SPORTS Athlete of the Week. Jonathan Pickett, a fourth-year outside hitter with the Gryphons men’s volleyball program, has been named U SPORTS (Men’s Volleyball) Athlete of the Week for the period covering March 4-10, 2024. Pickett was one of three student-athletes from across the country to earn U SPORTS Athlete of the Week honours with women’s volleyball, men’s volleyball and women’s hockey all represented within the latest weekly national honours.

Jonathan Pickett, a sport and event management major from Wiarton, Ontario, takes home U SPORTS (Men’s Volleyball) Athlete of the Week honours after a sensational performance in the OUA bronze medal game. Pickett carried the Gryphons to a memorable, five-set win in St. Catharines over the Brock Badgers on Saturday, March 9. Pickett recorded a game-high 30 kills on the night, leading the Gryphons to one of the biggest wins in program history with Guelph booking the OUA’s final spot at the 2024 U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championships, marking the first time in 36 years in which the Gryphons men’s volleyball team has qualified for the national championship tournament.
