Huskies claim weekend opener

SASKATOON, Sask. – The Saskatchewan Huskies welcomed the Calgary Dinos to Saskatoon on Friday night. The fourth-place Huskies were looking to continue a strong second half to their season against the seventh-place Dinos and powered to a 3-0 sweep, 25-20, 25-20, 25-10.
 
The Huskies started the first set strong, grabbing an early 10-5 lead. Calgary was able to mount a run and tie things up at 14-14. Saskatchewan went on a four-point run, forcing a Dinos timeout. The Huskies were in control from that point on, cruising to a comfortable 25-20 set win.
 
The second set started out much like the first, with Saskatchewan going up 10-5 early. This time around, they would continue to control the game, pushing their lead to 20-14. Calgary’s offence was able to push back and cut into the Huskies lead, but they were no match for the Huskies on this night, who would win the set 25-20 and take the 2-0 set lead. 
 
The Dinos were outmatched in the third set. Saskatchewan went up 6-1 before a Calgary timeout, and 13-2 before their second timeout. The timeouts did nothing to slow the high-powered Huskies, who were led by veteran Dylan Mortensen, who had an impressive nine kills in the set. The Huskies would take the third set 25-10 and the 3-0 win over the Dinos.

Saskatchewan swung at a stunning .481 attack percentage. 

Mortensen had 18 kills, three aces and a solo block for the Huskies. The Swift Current product has is currently in third place in all-time career kills in Canada West. Setter Jake Rapin had 33 assists on the evening. Calgary’s offence was led by Liam Kuppe with nine kills and two aces. Setter Zack Durrant had 12 assists and six digs. 

The Huskies are back in action against the Dinos for their final home game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
