Huskies Best Moncton 3-0 in Home Opener

Halifax – The Saint Mary’s University Huskies Women’s Volleyball team opened their home schedule of their AUS season Saturday afternoon as they played host to the Universite de Moncton.

The Huskies opened the AUS season last weekend with 3 victories over Memorial University in St. John’s and looked to remain perfect in this young season.

The opening set saw the visiting Angles-Blue come out firing pacing themselves to an early 9-1 lead.  The Huskies regrouped utilizing the offence of Olivia Bell (Lahave NS /Commerce) battled back to take the marathon set 27-25.

Up one set to none the Huskies took control early in the second set with strong net play by Bethany Smith (Moncton NB/ Arts) and Mariama Syll (Charters Settlement NB / Commerce) who willed the home squad to a second set 25-17 win.

In the third set Saint Mary’s seemed to be cruising to a straight set victory but the persistent Moncton squad behind the offence of Joanie Arsenault kept pace.  In the end a strong string of serves by Megan Bruhm (Hubley NS / Commerce) pushed the Huskies to a 25-22 set win.

Bruhm finished the game with a strong 10 kill, 3 service ace performance earning her AUS Subway Player of the Game.  While Bell finished with 10 kills and Smith adding 5 kills to go along with 4 blocks.  Moncton was led by Arsenault with 10 kills as well.

Both squads return to the court Sunday at 2 pm at the Homburg Centre where the Huskies look to remain unbeaten.
