Huskies beat Bisons in straight sets

With the win, Saskatchewan moved to 2-1, while Manitoba fell to 1-2 after the defeat.

The Huskies were more efficient on the night, finishing the contest with a .471 hitting percentage, in comparison to the Bisons .143 clip.

Manitoba was led by Keziah Hoeppner, who had eight kills, while Light Uchechukwu had six kills and two service aces.

Mandi Fraser had a big evening for Saskatchewan, recording nine kills, two service aces and three blocks, while Olivia Mattern had 13 kills of her own.

Dodds acknowledged the excitement in playing on their home court for the first time since Feb. 8, 2019.

“It’s a long time and it definitely felt good. I think we’ve led the league in attendance for volleyball over the past five-six years,” said Huskies head coach Mark Dodds.

“We had a good crowd out there that was passionate and cheering on Huskies volleyball. It was great.”

On top of the win and return to the PAC, the big story of the night was Emily Koshinsky. The fifth-year outside hitter entered the contest 14 kills back of the Huskies all-time record for program kills and she recorded her 14th of the evening in the third-set to move her name into a tie in the record books with 1028 kills.

Witnessing Koshinsky’s growth from the time since the Jansen, Sask. product stepped into the program in 2016.

“It’s just been fun to watch. I mean you see somebody that comes in day-in and day-out and playing at that level, putting up those kinds of numbers, it’s pretty special to watch,” said Dodds.

“We’ll definitely celebrate it a little bit when it happens and then just keep grinding.”

Koshinsky will have the opportunity to move into first-place on Saturday afternoon, when the Huskies conclude the weekend series against the Bisons at the PAC.
