SASKATOON, Sask. – Despite an impressive effort in the third and fourth sets, the Saskatchewan Huskies were unable to complete the comback Friday night at the Physical Actvity Complex, falling to the Mount Royal cougars ina five-set thriller.
With the loss the Dogs drop to 1-2 on the season, holding onto 8th-place in the conference standings. Meanwhile the Cougars pick up their first win of the campaign and move up the Canada West table, also with a record of 1-2.
Despite a back-and-forth start the game’s opening set, the Cougars took the early lead thanks to an impressive run to close out a 25-16 win. A similar script played out in the second half, giving the visiting team a commanding 2-0 set lead.
In the third, the Dogs were able to cut the deficit to one set with a great effort late to stick with the Cougars and pull out a 27-25 win. Third-year outside hitter Taryn Hannah led the Huskies on the day with 17.5 points and 14 kills as she continues her strong start to the 2024-25 campaign.
For the visiting Cougars, Grace Coulter and Bronwynn Davies-Neira who each totaled 11.0 points with 10 and 6 kills respectively.
The fourth set once again saw the Huskies pull out a late win, sending the match to a fifth set with a 28-28 win.
Unfortunately, a strong start to the fifth would put the Huskies behind the eight-ball early, and unable to climb out of the deficit, the Cougars would take the win 15-13.
The two teams are back at Saturday afternoon with the first serve set for 3:00 PM at the Physical Activity Complex.
