MONTREAL – Mathieu Gagnon of Gatineau, Que., and Charlène Robitaille of St. Jean, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 11, 2024.
Gagnon, a 22-year-old management sophomore with the men’s hockey team, scored two goals and added two assists as No.4-ranked McGill extended its win streak to seven by defeating Carleton 6-3 in Ottawa last Saturday to clinch the OUA East regular season title with a 21-5-2 record. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound centre, who scored seven points in his last two games, finished with a 7-17-24 record in 28 contests and had only four penalty minutes. He has played a key role in helping McGill lead the nation in penalty-killing at 89.2 per cent efficiency. Gagnon was recruited to McGill in 2022 after playing the previous five seasons for Rouyn-Noranda in the QJMHL.
Robitaille, a six-foot middle blocker on the women’s volleyball squad, scored a team-leading 29 points with 16 digs over seven sets as McGill defeated UQTR 3-1 and swept Ottawa 3-0 last week. The results extended the team’s win streak to six and improved McGill’s record to 15-5 with a share of first place in the RSEQ conference standings and only one game remaining before playoffs. Robitaille registered 20 kills, a pair of service aces, three stuff blocks, eight assisted blocks and five assists. The 25-year-old is currently working on a diploma in management after graduating in 2022 with a degree in nutritional science. A product of Collège Edouard-Montpetit, she enrolled at McGill in 2018.
