Gryphon Weekend Wrap (Nov. 3-5, 2023)

GUELPH, Ont. – A total of 9 Gryphon varsity teams are featured in the latest edition of the ‘Gryphon Weekend Wrap’ for the period covering November 3 to 5, 2023.
 

Three Gryphon varsity teams were in playoff action this past weekend with the women’s rugby team and men’s lacrosse team competing in national tournaments. The women’s rugby team captured a 4th-place finish at the 2023 U SPORTS Women’s Rugby Championships after falling to the Victoria Vikes in the semifinal round and the Queen’s Gaels in the bronze medal match. The men’s lacrosse team saw their 2023 season come to an end Friday in Peterborough, losing to the McGill Redbirds in the Baggataway Cup quarterfinal round. The Gryphons men’s rugby team hosted the Laurier Golden Hawks in the OUA semifinal round in what was a rematch of last season’s championship game. The Gryphons defeated the Golden Hawks to advance to the OUA Championship match, which they will host on Thursday, November 9 (6pm) against the Queen’s Gaels. 

The Gryphon men’s and women’s basketball teams opened up their 2023-24 regular season schedules with the women going 1-1 against Ottawa and Carleton while the men fell in both games despite taking the defending national champion Ravens down to the wire. The Gryphons men’s volleyball team was also in season-opening action, defeating the Waterloo Warriors twice to start their season off 2-0. 

On the ice, both Gryphon hockey teams went 2-0 this week. The U of G men’s hockey team defeated the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks Friday night before taking down the Windsor Lancers on Saturday. The women’s hockey team meanwhile beat the Brock Badgers 4-1 on Thursday before shutting out the York Lions 3-0 Saturday afternoon.
