GUELPH, Ont. – A total of 11 Gryphon varsity teams are featured in the latest edition of the ‘Gryphon Weekend Wrap’ for the period covering November 17 to 19, 2023.
The past weekend of Gryphon athletics action was highlighted by the U of G men’s rugby team capturing a bronze medal at the 2023 Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championships, matching their best result at the national tournament which started in 2017. The team defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks 38-12 in the third-place game to earn the final podium position.
Opening their 2023-24 season was the defending national champion Gryphon track & field team which hosted the Tenke Classic Friday evening (Nov. 17). The meet featured primarily field athletes from the U of G team competing, and was highlighted by Chloe Zaraska who set a height of 1.68m in the high jump. 2022-23 U SPORTS gold medalist Jennifer Elizarov looked to return to form in the pole vault, jumping 3.80m, 23cm off of jump that won gold last March. Fourth-year thrower Meghan Mori impressed in the shot put, throwing for a personal best of 12.99m. On the men’s side a pair of rookies led the way in the season-opener, Anthony Glasgow won the men’s high jump with a jump of 1.93m while Michael Sampson jumped 6.82m in the long jump for a personal best, and win.
The Gryphon wrestling team made their way back to Toronto for the York Open Sunday afternoon (Nov. 19). In a field full of talent from across the OUA, Jayden Sparks led the way on the women’s side winning multiple matches en route to a bronze medal match appearance. On the men’s side, freshman Tyler Barry and Cooper Feke impressed in the 61 and 57kg weight classes, with both student-athletes winning in their first university meet.
On the squash court, the Gryphons sent 15 athletes to Hamilton for the McMaster Invitational. The men took on the host Marauders and Glendon College, defeating both teams by way of 5-2 and 7-0 scores. Meanwhile the women’s team took on McMaster and the Queen’s Gaels, falling in both matches.
The Gryphon fencing team was also in action this past weekend, making the trip to St. Catharines, Ontario for the Brock Invitational.
In other Gryphon varsity action, the men’s and women’s hockey, basketball, and volleyball teams all continued their regular season schedules, with the Gryphon hockey and basketball teams playing home games while the U of G volleyball teams took on the Trent Excalibur on the road.
