GUELPH, Ont. – A total of 10 Gryphon varsity teams are featured in the latest edition of the ‘Gryphon Weekend Wrap’ for the period covering November 10 to 12, 2023.
Two Gryphon varsity programs were in postseason action this past weekend, with the U of G cross country and rowing teams traveling to their respective national championships. On Saturday and Sunday in Burnaby, BC the Gryphon rowing teams competed in the 2023 Canadian University Rowing Championships, with the women finishing 8th in the team standings and the men 10th. The weekend was highlight by the women’s open 2x crew made up of Kaylea Bray and Mayva Hergel who captured bronze for the lone Gryphon medal of the championships. In London, Ontario on Sunday the Gryphon men’s and women’s cross country teams finished 4th in the overall team standings at the 2023 U SPORTS Cross Country Championships, led by Nicholas Bannon (12th) on the men’s side and Julia Agostinelli (17th) on the women’s.
On the ice, the U of G women’s hockey team picked up a pair of big wins over ranked opponents, defeating the No. 5-ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday followed by a win on Saturday afternoon over the No. 10-ranked Waterloo Warriors. Both wins came in part to Martina Fedel’s stellar play between the pipes where she picked up a pair of shutouts. The Gryphons now sit in 1st-place in the OUA West standings with a one-point advantage over the 2nd-place Laurier Golden Hawks.
Making their season debut was the Gryphon curling team which hosted the Gryphon Invitational (Nov. 11-12) to kick off the 2023-24 OUA curling season. The men’s team went 2-1 through pool play, capturing the top spot in their pool and 3rd overall for the tournament. In the semifinals the Gryphon took on the Brock Badgers, falling 5-4 in a tightly-contested match. On the women’s side the Gryphons tied for the best record in their pool at 2-1 and faced-off with the TMU Bold in the quarterfinals. An early lead helped the Gryphons to a 6-5 win over the Bold and advance the team to a semifinal match with Brock. In the semifinals the Gryphons fell into an early 6-0 hole but would battle back to force a two point game in the 6th end. Unfortunately, the comeback attempt would fall just short, with the Gryphons falling 7-6.
On the court, the Gryphons men’s and women’s volleyball teams each swept their opponents, with the women starting the season off 2-0 and the men improving to 4-0. For the Gryphon basketball teams, the women moved to 2-2 on the season with a road win over Waterloo while the men fell to 0-4 after suffering an overtime loss to the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday at U of W.
Finally, 18 student-athletes from the University of Guelph’s wrestling team made the trip to Toronto for the TMU invitational on Sunday, competing among 180 athletes. The Gryphons were featured in plenty of matches at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, with some strong performances as both the men’s and women’s teams continue to improve early in the season.
