Gaels defeat Gryphons again for weekend sweep

KINGSTON, Ont. (Feb. 10, 2024) – Queen’s Men’s Volleyball completed a massive sweep of the Guelph Gryphons with a 3-1 (25-21, 28-26, 15-25, 25-22) victory Saturday night at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC).

The second straight win over the previously first place Gryphons improved the Gaels’ record to 14-4, moving them into second place in the OUA standings, behind only the McMaster Marauders (15-4).

After a solid four-point win in the first set, Queen’s edged out Guelph in extra points in the second set. The Gryphons fought back for a big third set win before Queen’s closed out the victory with a three-point win in the fourth set.

Prior to the game, the Gaels honoured graduating seniors Erik Siksna and Lhexen Rabit.

Erik Siksna (Markham, Ont.) had another strong performance offensively, leading all players with 19 kills while adding two aces and three blocks.

Reed Venning (Courtice, Ont.) finished with 17 kills while Dax Thompkins (Tiverton, Ont.) had nine kills and three blocks.

Chris Zimmerman (Prince George, B.C.) recorded a game-high 47 assists while adding seven digs, while Zig Licis (Louisville, CO) had eight digs.

Queen’s will close out their regular season next weekend in London, Ont. taking on the Western Mustangs in a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 16 and Saturday, Feb. 17.
