Dinos turn the lights out on MacEwan

EDMONTON – The University of Calgary men’s volleyball team continued its winning ways with a 3-1 victory over MacEwan Saturday evening from David Atkinson Gym.

The nationally ranked Dinos hit .336 for the match in moving to 8-4 overall, winning four of their last five including a weekend sweep of the Griffins (1-11) in Edmonton.

Hamish Hazelden led the attack for the Dinos, finishing with 15 kills. Louis Kunstmann also tallied double figures with 12 kills on the night, hitting an impressive .579.

Jacob Reid had a double-double on the night with 47 assists in the four-set win, while also racking up 10 digs and four blocks. Erik Godwin also had a strong defensive showing, finishing with a game-high 11 digs.

Alexei Walisser led the way for the Griffins with 14 kills and eight digs.

After a back-and-forth start to the night, the Dinos were able to break open the opening frame with an emphatic run. Tied at 14-all, Hazelden and Kunstmann each hammered home kills before back-to-back Dinos blocks suddenly gave the Scarlett and Gold an 18-14 edge. MacEwan made a comeback effort late, but Lincoln Baines and Godwin teamed up for a block to put away the first set.

It was much of the same in the second as the Dinos cruised to a 2-0 lead and just missed a complete sweep, as the Griffins were able to take the third set in extras, 26-24.

Calgary left no doubt in the fourth, steamrolling to a 25-12 win to clinch the weekend sweep.

The Dinos now have a scheduled weekend off before returning to action Feb. 10 when they host Mount Royal at 7:30 p.m. from the Jack Simpson Gym.
