Dinos drop second to Bears

EDMONTON – Cruising to a straight set win, the University of Alberta Golden Bears defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-15) for the second straight night on Saturday at Saville Community Sports Centre.

With the win, the Bears not only sweep the Dinos in the weekend series, they also extend their perfect season win streak to six games. On the other hand, the Dino lose their second game of the season and now have a 4-2 record.

Leading the charge for the Bears was rookie Isaac Heslinga with 13 kills, three digs and one ace. Meanwhile, senior setter Max Elgert continues to produce on the season, adding 37 assists, three digs and one ace.

Across the court, the Dinos struggled to produce on the road with a team kill percentage of .101 on the night. Finding the most success was senior Hamish Hazelden with seven kills, while setter Jacob Reid had 15 assists and four digs.

Jumping out to a slight lead, the Bear led 4-1 to start the game. Contouring to hold the lead throughout the set they found themselves up 16-10 at the technical timeout before carrying on to a 25-20 set win.

Looking to even out the score, the visitors battled hard, exchanging points with their host. However, after a momentum killing ace from the Bears Jordan Canham, the Dinos found themselves down two sets and being forced to fight to stay alive heading into the third.

Not able to find their attacking rhythm, the Dinos had just 6 kills in the third and final set. Ending on an attack error by Parker Siroishka, the Bears secured the win 25-15.

Up next, the Dinos will hope to regroup against their cross town rivals, the Mount Royal Cougars next weekend, with the Cougars hosting both matches.
