EDMONTON – Behind a season-high 17 kills from senior Kenzie Vaandering, the University of Calgary Dinos women’s volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep of MacEwan Friday night inside the David Atkinson Gymnasium.
The Griffins took Calgary to extras in the opening frame before the Dinos found their groove and cruised to the win, 27-25, 25-17, 25-17.
Vaandering was the offensive star of the night, hammering home 17 kills on just 29 attacks for an impressive .448 hitting percentage.
Evelyn Kath guided the Dinos offence with 24 assists in the quick sweep.
Defensively, Calgary was outstanding at the net on the night, finishing the match with nine blocks – six coming at the hands of rookie Mya Sheridan.
The opening frame was back-and-forth the whole way, needing extras to decide the winner. Tied at 25-all, the Dinos got a big kill from Vaandering before Regan Ingram closed things out with a kill of her own to give her squad the 1-0 lead.
From there it was all Calgary.
The Dinos jumped out to a 16-10 lead in the second after kill from Sophie Reed. After MacEwan closed the gap to 20-15, Calgary rattled off four in a row – capped from a kill by Sammi Boag – to all but put this one away. Boag added another on a nice swing to make it a 2-0 lead.
Calgary was convincing from start to finish in the third. Leading 10-8, Vaandering had another kill to start a 4-0 run to make it 14-8. After a short spurt from MacEwan, the Dinos went on another 4-0 run, this one capped on a slam by Deserae Unger to make it 18-11. Unger was able to find the floor again for the winner to complete the sweep for the visitors.
With the win, Calgary improves to 5-12 on the season, while the Griffins drop to 0-17.
The two teams will close out the regular season Saturday at 5 p.m., with the game once again streamed on Canada West TV, presented by Co-Op.
