CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women’s volleyball team dropped a four-set match to their crosstown rival, the Mount Royal Cougars by a 3-1 score (12-25, 19-25, 25-19, 21-25) on Friday night in the Jack Simpson Gym.
First-year outside hitter Sophia Hansen topped the Dinos with 10 kills and added seven digs. Dominique Desautels and Daisy Olsen also contributed with six kills each.
On the other end of the floor, the Cougars countered well, with Grace Coulter and Sydney Scatcherd in the double digits in the kill column. Coulter managed 15 kills and nine digs, while Scatcherd had 12 and eight.
The Cougars took control in the first set as they outswung the Dinos 15-3 with a 0.500 hitting percentage and three aces. The Cougars gained momentum as they pulled ahead to secure the 25-12 set score.
The Dinos closed the gap in the second set as they pulled ahead by six points at 11-5. Mount Royal clawed their way back into the set and trailed by one with the score 19-18 for the home side. But Calgary wouldn’t score again in the set as Mount Royal compiled seven consecutive points to take it 25-19.
Calgary had its best performance of the evening in the third set as they looked to extend the match. The score remained close into the final points of the set before a bad set, and a couple of attack errors swung it for the Dinos.
The energy was high in the Jack as the fourth set was underway, but the Dinos would fall short 25-21 in the battle for five. Sydney Scatcherd of the Cougars capped off the night with a kill assisted by Alexa Herrod.
Herrod collected 42 assists to her name.
The Dinos and Cougars match up again on Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. game time in the Jack Simpson Gym.
