Cougars fall in three sets to defending champs UBC

The University of Regina’s women’s volleyball team lost 3-0 to defending U SPORTS champions UBC on Saturday night at War Memorial Gymnasium in Vancouver.

NOTES

  • UBC opened the match with a 25-18 win in the opening set, then took 25-10 and 25-12 victories in the second and third sets to complete its second three-set sweep over the Cougars in as many nights.
  • Lucy Borowski led the way offensively for the Thunderbirds, who will almost certainly be ranked No. 1 in the nation when the first U SPORTS rankings of the new season are released next week. Borowski finished with a match-high 13 kills while hitting .385 during the match and reeling off 5 service aces. Akash Grewal added nine kills for UBC and hit .467.
  • Jordy McEachern had eight kills to lead the Cougars. McKenzie Keibel had a team-leading seven digs.
  • Zoey Thompson played in her first Canada West match for Regina. The Estevan product got the start at middle blocker and played in all three sets.

NEXT UP
After four consecutive away matches to start the Canada West schedule, the Cougars (1-3) will finally play their home openers this coming weekend against Calgary. They’ll play the Dinos (1-1) on Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport with first serve set for 6:00 PM on both nights.
