The Brock Badgers men’s volleyball team won their second game in a row over the Trent Excalibur, dispatching the visitors in three sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-20) on Saturday, Dec. 2 at Bob Davis Gymnasium.
Cooney, a sophomore outside hitter, led all scorers with 14.5 points via a game-high 13 kills along with one service ace and 0.5 blocks. Kyler Code was not far behind with 10 points, accumulating all of them off kills. Veteran setter Grant Reddon delivered a game-high 31 assists, while junior libero Adrian Gasper registered a game-high six digs.
The first saw the Badgers hit at an impressive clip, registering a .438 hitting percentage off nine kills with two errors in only 16 attempts. Brock took the lead early and never looked back, winning the set 25-17.
The Excalibur came out firing in the next set, going on a 3-0 run. The Badgers continued to chip away, with Cooney notching an impressive seven kills in the set to lead the team. The two squads traded service errors to end the set as Brock earned the 25-18 victory.
Both teams battled in the third set as they traded points in the early going with the score remaining tied at 8-8. Once Brock took a 9-8 lead off a Code kill, they did not look back, holding off a Trent comeback attempt for the 25-20 third set win. Brock notched 15 kills in the frame; their highest set total of the match.
Up next, the Badgers (6-2) will return to action in the new year as they host the RMC Paladins on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 8 p.m.
