Devin Cooney (Kanata, ON) of the men’s volleyball team and Angeline Campbell (Toronto, ON) of the women’s basketball team have been named the Brock University Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Nov. 17.
In an impressive performance on Saturday, Nov. 16, Cooney delivered a new record in the modern day era of the men’s volleyball program with 37.5 points in a single match. The Business Communication major notched an impressive 34 kills on 70 attempts for a .314 hitting percentage while adding two service aces and 1.5 blocks in the 3-1 loss to the Guelph Gryphons. The night prior on Friday, Nov. 15, Cooney registered another 20-plus point performance, scoring off 19 kills and 1.5 blocks against the Gryphons. Currently, the third-year outside hitter leads all scorers in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) conference with 152 total points, 5.2 points per set, 128 total kills and 4.41 kills per set.
Campbell put up an incredible all-around performance against the Ottawa Gee-Gees, the No. 2 team in the country, on Friday, Nov. 15 with a double-double off 18 points and 10 assists in 35 minutes of play. The fifth-year guard shot 46.7 per cent from the field and 33.3 per cent from beyond the arc in the 58-56 victory. Campbell’s free throw helped give the Badgers a two-point lead with six seconds left in the contest as they won the contest 58-56. In the next game on Sunday, Nov. 17, the Women’s and Gender studies student put up nine points and three assists in the 76-59 loss to the No. 6 Carleton Ravens. Her 5.0 assists per game puts her third in the province, while she sits just outside the top 20 in points per game with 12.5.
