Community support reaches new heights in 2024 Marauder Giving Challenge

HAMILTON, Ont. – The McMaster Marauder community came together Tuesday with unparalleled generosity for the 2024 Marauder Giving Challenge, raising an incredible $149,488 through 1,052 donations.

“This year’s results reflect the deep connection our community has with Marauder Athletics,” said Keenan Jeppesen, Director of Athletics & Recreation. “The collective effort of over 1,000 donors will have an extraordinary impact on our programs and the lives of our student-athletes. We are immensely grateful for everyone who contributed to this success.”

The Marauder swim team led the way with an extraordinary total of $33,585 raised, followed by Cross Country/Track with $16,305 and Men’s Lacrosse with $12,360. These numbers highlight not only the dedication of the teams but the unwavering support of the alumni, families, and friends who believe in the Marauder experience. Final results for the challenge bonuses and awards are still being reviewed and will be shared in the coming days.

“Every donation makes a meaningful difference, giving us the resources to train harder, enhance our facilities, and bring us closer to our goal of winning an OUA championship,” said Josh Kalmin, a member of McMaster Baseball. “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who supports our growth, and it means so much to know our community is with us every step of the way.”

This year’s Giving Challenge united current student-athletes and alumni in their shared appreciation for the opportunities McMaster Athletics creates. Marauder football alumnus Jesse Lumsden reflected on the importance of giving back during a conversation with Jeppesen.

“If you’re fortunate enough to continue to go on and get to the next level, you want to be able to send the elevator back down, and that’s a really big part of what the alumni can do for the [current] Marauders,” said Lumsden.

The challenge inspired heartfelt reflections from student-athletes on the impact of donor support. “Although golf is an individual sport, being on this team fosters a unique sense of community where we connect with others who share our passion and commitment,” said Kaylee Jeon, a member of the golf team. “Every contribution is an investment in our growth, ultimately pushing us to become stronger athletes and individuals.”

The Giving Challenge demonstrated how McMaster’s Athletics & Recreation programs continue to contribute to developing not only elite athletes, but leaders who are committed to giving back to their communities.

Donors also supported broader initiatives, such as the McMaster Camps Scholarship Program and the Performance and Wellness Workshop, creating meaningful opportunities for local youth and promoting student-athlete well-being.

“Being part of the McMaster men’s volleyball team has truly shaped my university experience in ways I never imagined,” said Matthew Rugosi. “The support from donors has allowed me to grow not just as an athlete but also as an individual. Thank you for making this journey possible.”

As the department celebrates this remarkable achievement, Jeppesen expressed gratitude for the collective effort that made it possible. “This campaign is a shining example of what we can accomplish together. Thank you for believing in our programs, our student-athletes, and the power of sport to transform lives.”
