BRANDON, Man. – Mikayla Benterud [Clay] (Sherwood Park, Alta.) led Trinity Western in a 3-1 victory (25-21, 25-14, 17-25, 25-18) over Brandon at the Healthy Living Centre on Friday.
Clay’s performance was spectacular, leading the Spartans (21-2) with 11 kills on a hitting percentage of .529 and six blocks. The game-high in kills came from Kirsten Kampman (Abbotsford, B.C.), put down 12 kills in the victory. For the Bobcats (0-23), it was Syree Tucker and Avery Burgar combining for 21 kills in their loss.
AS IT HAPPENED
The first set resulted in a 25-21 victory for the Spartans, who narrowly edged past Brandon in kills, leading 14-12 in the frame.
The second set was TWU’s best of the night, holding the Bobcats to a hitting percentage of .000 to take a 25-14 victory for a 2-0 lead.
TWU struggled in the third set, hitting .043 to suffer a 25-17 loss, bringing Brandon within one.
The Spartans closed out the final set with a 25-18 victory, hitting .233 in the final set to earn their 21st victory of the season.
NOTABLE
- The Spartans are 30-6 all-time against the Bobcats, winning 18 straight in the matchup. TWU’s last loss to Brandon came on Feb. 1, 2014.
- Friday’s tally of 12 kills stands as a career-high for Kampman, besting her previous record of eight, which was set on Jan. 6, 2023 against Alberta.
