Bold unable to record weekend split against Mustangs

Published on

LONDON — The TMU Bold women’s volleyball team was unable to pick up a win on opening weekend, as they fell 3-0 (20-25, 17-25, 12-25) to the Western Mustangs on Saturday night at the Alumni Hall.

Unlike on Friday night, when the Bold also dropped the opening two sets, the team couldn’t kickstart a comeback bid to force a fourth frame, as they fell in straight sets for the first time this season.

Six kills from Julie Moore in the early going of the opening frame helped the Bold hop out to a 17-16 lead. But from there, the Mustangs reeled off six-straight points, and nine of the final 12, to take the first set.

A 9-2 Western run in the second set meant TMU was playing catch up throughout the frame — a deficit they were unable to climb their way out of, despite another four kills from Moore. The dropped set ultimately foreshadowed the eventual defeat, as the Mustangs ran away with the third-and-final frame to pick up the victory.

Moore led the Bold with 12 kills, while Ahsley Ditchfield had a team-high two service aces. Moore and Mary Rioflorido each had nine digs.

Next up for the Bold is a meeting with the crosstown rival Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre — a match that will serve as the team’s home opener. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
