KINGSTON, Ont. – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men’s volleyball squad picked up their second straight-set victory in as many days, besting the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins to wrap up their weekend road trip in style.
Jacob Walker and Alex King provided the Bold with timely and tidy offence in the winning effort, combining for 24 of the group’s 39 kills to push TMU’s unbeaten run over the Paladins another season.
Kai Higuchi and Lyam Krapp rounded out the Bold’s attack earlier this evening, with the latter recording a season-high three service aces in the win.
Coming off the high of their straight-set win in last night’s contest, a solemn start greeted the Bold in their Saturday matinee against the very same Paladins.
The Toronto side quickly found themselves under siege from the RMC attack as David Feher and Joshua Wilkinson relentlessly dented the hardwood for the home side, posting kill after kill to push the Bold further behind the eight ball.
TMU’s big hitters in Walker and Krapp steadily worked towards obtaining a level score with the red and white, and were successful in doing so midway through the frame.
A pair of kills and a service ace highlighted a pivotal five-point run for the blue and gold that handed the visitors a lead they would not relinquish throughout the remainder of the set.
The Paladins would come within arms reach of the Bold during the late stages of the initial set before King delivered his fourth and final kill of the frame to secure the opening win.
King’s dominance spilled into the middle stanza as well, kicking off the set with a pair of quick kills to effectively set the tone for the Bold. As the set inched its way forward, both the Bold and Paladins continued to trade blows in an effort to come out on top.
Spending much of the frame chasing down the RMC lead, the Bold would come close to edging out the Kingston side a handful of times as they worked to deliver a tie-breaking blow the Paladins’ way.
The group’s efforts were rewarded in the dying stages of the middle stanza as crucial kills from both King and Omari Young helped pull the Bold ahead and secure a 26-24 win.
It was downhill sledding the rest of the way for the blue and gold who quickly jumped to a 14-6 lead over the Paladins in the early stages of the frame. Similar to the Bold’s pivotal streak in the opening frame of the match, the Paladins used their five-point run to quickly climb their way back into the contest and pull within striking distance.
Nevertheless, the strength of Walker and King would overpower the RMC defence as the match inched its way into the late stages. The two would combine for six of the Bold’s eight kills in the set, with Walker sealing the deal on consecutive service aces to sink the winless Paladins.
The group will head home to prepare for their final home stand of the regular season, with action kicking off Wednesday, February 1 against the visiting Waterloo Warriors. First serve flies at 7 p.m.
