The University of Regina’s women’s volleyball team scored its first Canada West victory of the season in a five-set thriller over Brandon on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars stormed out to a 25-11 win in the first set, but Brandon replied with a 25-20 win in the second to square the match at 1-1.
It looked as though Brandon might take the lead in the third after going up 22-19, but Jordy McEachern had other ideas. She had kills on four of the U of R’s next five points, then teamed up with Kaylyn Brown for a block which gave the Cougars a 26-24 win.
The Cougars had two chances to win it in the fourth set after going up 24-22, but Brandon forced a fifth and deciding set after winning each of the next four points.
In the deciding set, Brandon led 12-10 but the Cougars took the next four points to go up 14-12. Brandon’s Avery Burgar got a kill on the next play, but the Cougars finally converted on their fourth match point of the night on a Cassadi Klapak roll shot from the right side to clinch the win.
The Cougars and Brandon will meet again on Saturday night to close out the weekend. First serve is again set for 6:00 PM.
