The University of Toronto women’s volleyball team won 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 25-14) against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday (Oct. 28) afternoon at the Goldring Centre Kimel Family Field House.
The Blues were led by outside hitter Julia Murmann who finished the game with 18.5 points including 16 kills, 19 digs, one solo block and one ace. Outside hitter Olivia Zhu recorded 17.5 points in the match with 16 kills, 13 dig and one service ace. Fellow outside hitter Giulia Chimilovksi had a total of 14.5 points in the match with 12 kills, eight digs, and one service ace. Blues setter Robin Melnick recorded a game-high 45 assists.
As the game began, the Blues trailed the Warriors until a kill came from Anna Gadomski midway through the first set. Her attack created scoring opportunities for the Blues which handed the team the momentum, including a 7-3 scoring run. The Blues would hold the lead for the remainder of the set, taking it 25-20.
The second set went the way of the Blues with them scoring the first point of the set. However, they trailed the Warriors until midway through the set following the pattern of the previous one. With a kill from Zhu and block from middle hitter Thea Ziesmann, they equalized the score 12-12. Following that pivotal moment, the Blues took control of the second set winning 25-20.
While the Blues started off leading the third set, they were bested by the Warriors’ offense as they held the momentum through the set. The Warriors took the third set 25-20.
The Blues came back strong in the fourth and final set. As the Warriors defense fell, the Blues offense took over. By way of kills and crucial plays from Gadomski, Murmann, and Zhu, the Blues took the set 25-14.
Next up, the Blues will kick off their regular season on the road in Hamilton, Ont. as they face-off against the McMaster University Marauders on Saturday, November 4. First serve is set for 1p.m. The game will be streamed live and on-demand via oua.tv.
