Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team swept the Nipissing Lakers 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-19) on Friday night (Feb. 10) in North Bay. The Blues have extended their winning streak to three games and now hold a 8-10 record on the season.
With the win, the Blues improve to 8-10 and sit in ninth place, two points out of eighth and the last playoff spot with two regular season matches remaining.
TORONTO STATS: Fourth-year outside hitter Hope Kotun led the Blues with 13 points, with 11 kills and two service aces. Kotun also added 11 digs on the night. Fellow fourth-year Elizabeth Bilawaey scored 10.5 points, through five kills, three service aces and two solo blocks.
Second-year outside hitter Julia Murmann recorded a game-high 16 digs, while setter Jasmine Safar had 26 assists in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The first set started with the Blues going on a five-point scoring run, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. As the Blues moved towards a first-set victory, they would score key kills by way of Kotun and first-year outside hitter Olivia Zhu. The Blues would take the first set 25-14.
In the second set, the Lakers returned with passion and took a brief lead midway through the set (14-15). This however did not deter the Blues, they were able to tie up the set 20-20. The remainder of the set fell in the Blues favour with crucial plays from Bilawey and Murmann as the laters kill rounded out the set 25-23.
The third and final set followed the same trajectory as the set it followed. The first point of the set was scored by the Blues, while the Lakers took the lead midway through the set. However, the Blues were able to go on a six-point run to take the set 25-19.
UP NEXT: The two teams do battle again tomorrow (Feb. 11). First serve is set for 4:00 p.m.
