In a highly anticipated rematch, the Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team fell to the Western Mustangs 2-3 (14-25, 25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 9-15) on Sunday (Jan. 29) afternoon at the Alumni Hall in London, Ont.
TORONTO STATS: Fourth-year outside hitter Hope Kotun led the Blues with 18.5 points, totalling 17 kills and one solo block. Second-year stand out Julia Murmann followed close behind with 17 points, adding 15 kills, two solo blocks and 19 digs.
First-year outside hitter Olivia Zhu scored 11 points on the game. She totalled 10 kills, one ace, and 12 digs. Jasmine Safar and Jenna Peters set up the Blues this afternoon, picking up 24 and 20 assists, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues and the Mustangs came back for the second game of the back-to-back ready to play. In the first set, the Blues trailed Western throughout the duration of the set, falling 14-25.
The second set began with a series of back-and-forth rallies between the Blues and the Mustangs. U of T went on to win the set 25-23, with crucial plays from Murmann and Kotun. The momentum continued for the Varsity Blues in the third set as they went on several scoring runs to win 25-20.
In the fourth, the Blues and Mustangs battled it out, with Western winning the set 19-25, forcing a fifth set. The Mustangs would take the final set 9-15 to secure the win.
UP NEXT: The Blues return to action Friday, February 3 at home at the Goldring Centre. Kimel Family Field House vs. the Guelph Gryphons. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
