The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team fell to the TMU Bold 3-1 in the OUA Quarter-Finals on Saturday (Feb. 24) evening at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Ont.
Set scores in the match were 25-19, 21-25, 17-25, 21-25.
Despite the loss, the Blues demonstrated their ability to challenge the Bold. Following their win in the first set, the Blues began the second set in the lead and held it until midway of the set when the Bold tied it up (15-15). In the fourth set the Blues held the lead until the Bold caught up and tied at (18-18). The Bold led in the majority of categories, including in points (70.0-59.0) and kills (59-49). On the defensive end, TMU had seven blocks to Toronto’s six, while having 85 digs compared to the Blues 84.
In her last game for the Blues, outside hitter Julia Murmann led the team with a game high 18 points. She recorded her points from 18 kills. Murmann was followed by fellow outside hitter Olivia Zhu who had a total of 16.5 points. Zhu tallied her points from 14 kills, one service ace, one solo block, and one block assist.
The Blues offence was made from setter Robin Melnick. Melnick led the Blues with 32 assists. Blues first-year libero Delaney Watson recorded a team-high 21 digs; Murmann followed with 20.
Outside hitter Julie Gordon and right-side Mikayla Sherriffs led the Bold with a team-high of 16.5 points each. Gordon registered her points from 14 kills, one solo block, one service ace, and one block assist. Sherriffs tallied her points from 16 kills and one block assist.
