After a tightly-contested match, the Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team fell to the Western Mustangs 1-3 (21-25, 25-20, 14-25,12-25) on Saturday (Jan. 28) at the Alumni Hall in London, Ont.
TORONTO STATS: Fourth-year outside hitter Hope Kotun led the Blues with 13 points off of 12 kills and an ace. The kinesiology major also stood out defensively, recording 16 digs.
Second-year stand out Julia Murmann also had a noteworthy night, tallying 12 points off of nine kills, an ace and a solo block.
Fourth-year setter Jasmine Safar totalled 22 assists in the contest..
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues and the Mustangs spent most of the first set neck-and-neck. Toronto continued battling until the very end with second-year Julia Murmann leading the team in attacks. The Blues ended the first sets just four-points shy of the Mustangs (25-21).
The Blues started the second set in the lead. The Blues contained that spirit for the rest of the set with outside hitters Julia Murmann and Hope Kotun sending kill after kill in the Mustangs’ direction and totalling 9 and 12 kills respectively. Ending the set up 25-20, the Blues were prepared for a comeback.
Similarly to the first, the third set had the Blues and the Mustangs fighting back and forth for the tiebreaking point. The Western Mustangs ended up taking the set, having gained an advantage after a timeout and holding onto it until the end (25-14).
In the fourth set, the Blues ended short of a comeback after an early Mustangs lead. The home team held the advantage and ultimately came out on top (25-12).
UP NEXT: The Blues return to action Sunday, January 29 on the road vs. the Western Mustangs. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
