Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team fell to the No. 9 McMaster Marauders 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 21-25, 14-25) on Sunday, January 15 at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
TORONTO STATS: Outside hitter Julia Murmann led the Blues with 13 points off of 11 kills, one ace and one solo block.
Burlington, Ont., native Jasmine Safar continued her fine form, totaling 32 assists and adding seven digs.
From the outside, rookie Olivia Zhu had 12 points and 7 digs, while fourth-year Hope Kotun also had 12 points, but added 11 kills and 17 digs. Libero Natalia Souza recorded 10 digs in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Marauders started strong, coming out with an early lead and ultimately taking the first set 25-17.
The second set carried the tone of a Blues comeback. Thanks to a strong defensive performance, the Blues held the lead from start to finish, ending the set 25-17.
However, through the third and fourth sets, the Blues comeback would fall short. The third set saw a tight battle between the Blues and Marauders. Battling rally-to-rally neither team held more than a two-point lead until a late Marauders run saw the Blues bested 25-21. The Marauders would claim their win in the fourth set downing the Blues 25-14.
UP NEXT: The Blues return to action next Friday, January 20 on the road vs. the Windsor Lancers. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
